Developing health care professionals for rural areas

The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation (UYDF) exists to address the shortages of qualified health care staff at rural hospitals and to improve health care delivery to the local indigent population. Rural hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal face shortages of qualified health care staff as high as 50 to 80%. In their learning brief, Umthombo shares their unique model, which is successfully addressing this skills shortage and has a high retention and success rate of their students, and therefore holds important direction for other sectors trying to achieve the same.
